What this is
CompCeiling is an independent, Ontario-built tool that answers one question for used-car dealers: what’s the most I can pay for this unit and still hit my number?You enter a year, make, model, and region; we show you what comparable units are being asked across Ontario lots right now, help you estimate reconditioning, and work backwards to a wholesale price ceiling built on your own margin. It’s a buying-desk tool — built for the trade, not for consumers.
Why we built it
Every used-car buyer in Ontario faces the same problem: the guidebooks lag the market, and the number that actually matters is what the lot down the road is asking this week. Book values are a starting point, not an answer — and they don’t tell you how many comparable units are out there or how long they’re sitting. CompCeiling was built to replace a gut-feel guess with a live, local read you can defend to yourself before you commit money.
How our data works
Being open about the method is the point — you should be able to see exactly why a number is what it is.
- Where it comes from. Every night we gather asking prices from over a thousand independent and franchise dealer websites across Ontario. When you search, we pull the matching live listings.
- How we clean it.We remove duplicate listings (the same vehicle showing up more than once), set aside prices that are obviously errors, and favour recent listings so you’re seeing the current market.
- What we show. The typical asking price, the range around it, how many comparable units are behind the number, and how long similar units have been sitting. If your region is thin on a vehicle, we widen the search across Ontario and tell you we did.
- What we never show.No individual dealer’s name, no specific listing, no VIN.
Our honesty rules
Dealers get burned by tools that dress up guesses as facts. These aren’t fine print — they’re how the product is built:
- Asking prices, not sold prices.Sold prices aren’t public in Ontario. We never pretend otherwise.
- Every number shows its backing.You always see how many listings sit behind a figure, rated plainly from high to low — and when your region doesn’t have enough matching vehicles, we widen to all of Ontario and say so.
- Totals and averages only.We show you the market as a whole — never another dealer’s individual listing, name, or VIN.
- The math is visible. Every valuation prints it in full: asking price − your profit − recon − fees = your ceiling. No black box.
- We’d rather show uncertainty than fake precision.When the data is weak, we flag it or widen the search — visibly. We won’t dress up two listings as a confident market read.
- It’s information, not an appraisal.You’re the professional — inspect the vehicle and make your own call.
